Football: Japan have no time to feel sorry for themselves, says captain Maya Yoshida after Asian Cup loss

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Japan captain Maya Yoshida says his side must learn from their painful Asian Cup final defeat and use the experience to make a breakthrough at the next World Cup by getting beyond the last 16 for the first time.
Japan had been looking for a fifth Asian title but were stunned 3-1 in the final by Qatar in the United Arab Emirates on Friday (Feb 1).
Invited to take part in the Copa America in June and July, and with their qualification campaign for the 2022 World Cup set to begin in September, there is little time for Japan to reflect on their disappointment.
"Our first target is, of course, to qualify for the World Cup, and then get over the wall at which we were stopped last time, the round of 16. That is an objective for Japanese football," Yoshida said after the final.
"In order to do that, we have the Copa America coming up and then in the autumn the World Cup qualifiers, and we have to make sure we learn from this defeat.
"We have to capitalise upon this experience looking ahead to what comes next. Of course I'm disappointed, but we have to look forward."
Yoshida said he felt a sense of responsibility for the surprise defeat by Qatar, who will host the World Cup in 2022.
"For the first and second goals, we conceded from a player right in front of me, and I really feel a big sense of regret that I wasn't able to lead the team to the title," he added.
Both Japan and Qatar will compete in Brazil as invitees when the Copa America starts on June 14.
Japan is also building towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with coach Hajime Moriyasu saying in the past he was aiming to match or better Japan's bronze medal achieved in 1968.
Despite originally considering sending an Under-23 squad to Brazil in preparation for the Olympics, the Japanese Football Association announced in December it would be sending a full-strength squad.
Japan's next fixture is a friendly against Colombia on March 22.

Japan and China will spearhead Asian challenge

Japan and China will spearhead Asian challenge
LONDON • Among the five teams to represent Asia at this year's Women's World Cup in France, Japan and China are likely to have the continent on edge as they seek to advance far in the tournament.
The Japanese team who were world champions in 2011 became a symbol of the nation's recovery from the devastating earthquake and tsunami earlier that year, as well as an inspiration for women's football around the globe.
A number of younger players from the 2011 generation have matured to provide the current side with leaders in every area, including defenders Saki Kumagai and Aya Sameshima, midfielders Mizuho Sakaguchi and Rumi Utsugi, plus forward Mana Iwabuchi.
They are joined by a new crop with plenty of international experience, such as Moeka Minami in defence, Yui Hasegawa and Hina Sugita in midfield, and Rikako Kobayashi up front.
Japan have a style of play underpinned by hard work and good technique, demonstrating an ability to punish opponents with patient build-up and coordinated pressing.
But in a modern world where tactical trends are increasingly homogenised, Japan no longer possess the kind of qualities to stand themselves apart.
The 25-year-old forward Kumi Yokoyama is a real threat to defences however, capable of dribbling through tight spaces.
The Guardian predicts that Japan will reach the round of 16 at least.
For China, runners-up in 1999, they were just one step away from their first Asian title since 2007 in the Indonesian Asian Games last year, before being beaten by a last-minute Japan goal in the final.
The young generation of the Iron Rose are attempting to restore the team to their former glory, yet they are still some distance from the peaks they reached in the 1990s.
The defence, led by captain Wu Haiyan, is pretty settled but the line-up of the rest of the team depends on where the key forward, Wang Shuang, plays. She often has a free role and is expected to be firing on all cylinders after a largely successful season in France with Paris Saint-Germain.
Having reached the quarter-finals four years ago in Canada, coach Jia Xiuquan has said he would love to go one step further in France. But given the quality of the team, another appearance in the last eight might be more realistic.
South Korea, who reached the last 16 in 2015, will count on Chelsea midfielder Ji So-yun's experience of playing in Europe.
Nicknamed "Ji Messi" by fans who regard her as the female equivalent of the Barcelona great, she is their record scorer with 54 goals in 115 appearances.
Australia will be led by captain and striker Sam Kerr, 25, as they hope to improve on their quarter-final exit four years ago.
Thailand did not make it past the group stage in 2015 and will seek a better finish this time round.

Football: Man United 'not good enough', says Solskjaer

LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Manchester United had not been good enough over the course of the season after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Huddersfield ended their chances of qualifying for next year's Champions League.
United have now won just two of their past 11 games in all competitions as Huddersfield ended a run of eight straight defeats despite goalkeeper Jonas Lossl's error handing the visitors an early lead through Scott McTominay.
Terrible defending from Solskjaer's men gave the Terriers something to celebrate in their final home game before heading down to the Championship as Isaac Mbenza levelled on the hour mark.
United huffed and puffed but could not find a winner and they cannot now mathematically finish in the top four of the Premier League.
"We are where we are for a reason," Solskjaer told Sky Sports. "Over a long season we haven't been good enough to challenge for the Champions League places. It's not come as a surprise but we hoped to show a better performance today."
"We haven't taken enough points, won enough games, scored enough goals. It's always difficult when you lose your manager halfway through the season," he added. "It's caught up with us a little bit.
"It shows us where we are. We're not living in fantasy land thinking we can catch the top two, we're far away but we shouldn't be speaking about being far off the top four at Manchester United.

"We're many levels (behind) at the moment, that's the size of the challenge. It's a great challenge for us but I'm sure we'll make it."

Football: Aubameyang brace gives Arsenal win over Burnley

LONDON (REUTERS) - Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot to the top of the Premier League scoring charts with two goals in Saturday's (Dec 22) 3-1 home win over struggling Burnley, returning his side to winning ways after two straight defeats.
The Gabon forward gave Arsenal the lead in the 14th minute, knocking in a pass from Sead Kolasinac after a classy ball from Mesut Ozil. He then smashed high into the net in the 48th to complete an impressive counter-attack from Unai Emery's side.
Burnley, 18th in the table and without an away win since September, hit back with a scrappy goal from Ashley Barnes having spurned a good chance to take an unlikely lead at the start of the game when Ashley Westwood was denied by the feet of Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Substitute Alex Iwobi restored Arsenal's two-goal cushion with a simple finish in stoppage-time, helped by another clever move from German playmaker Ozil, who was left out of the team for Wednesday's 2-0 League Cup defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.
Aubameyang's brace moved him on to 12 goals for the season, leapfrogging Liverpool's Mohamed Salah as the league's top scorer and taking fifth-placed Arsenal on to 37 points, level with Chelsea who play Leicester City later.
Arsenal's 22-game unbeaten run in all competitions was halted on Sunday with a 3-2 defeat at Southampton and they were knocked out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage with a painful home loss to north London neighbours Tottenham.
They were given little respite from a highly physical Burnley side but ultimately had too much quality for Sean Dyche's side.
"We expected it to be tough, we prepared the match thinking about what they would do, that they would be strong in the air, so we made sure we won the duels and we also wanted to impose our game plan," Arsenal coach Emery told reporters.
"We could not play as we wanted to for 90 minutes but we are very happy with the victory. Physicality is part of football, you always need to be strong as well as impose your quality, and our victory today is a consequence of this."
Burnley coach Dyche credited his team for causing Arsenal problems, but cursed their own defensive vulnerabilities.
"Overall, I was pleased with the performance, especially the mentality to come here and take on the game," he said.
"A couple of their goals were soft, but attacking-wise we were a problem today for them. We could have got something but we know even with a good performance you can't afford to give away goals like the two we let in."

1 FULHAM NEED FRESH BLOOD

Claudio Ranieri said after their 2-0 loss to West Ham on Saturday that it was too soon to talk about the January transfer window, before admitting his Fulham squad required refreshing.
Something needs to be done about a defence that collapsed for the away side's two goals, but Ranieri also needs far better from the players he inherited from the sacked Slavisa Jokanovic.
Jean Michael Seri had the highest billing of Fulham's hefty summer spree but was a lost soul in their midfield, with his substitution leading to ironic cheers.

2 TOOTHLESS TERRIERS

The loss of Aaron Mooy to a knee injury expected to keep him out until February is a serious blow to Huddersfield.
They did not particularly miss the Australia midfielder during Saturday's 1-0 defeat by Newcastle. Juninho Bacuna, on his first league start, did well alongside Philip Billing and Jonathan Hogg, but the team looked blunt up front.
None of the attacking players David Wagner signed in the summer - Ramadan Sobhi, Isaac Mbenza and Adama Diakhaby - have made an impact, while their existing strikers, Laurent Depoitre and Steve Mounie, are not clinical enough.

3 HUNGRY YOUNG HORNETS

While Watford's key performers in their 3-2 win against Cardiff were Gerard Deulofeu and Abdoulaye Doucoure, Vicarage Road is bedding in an even younger generation.
Adalberto Penaranda, Ben Wilmot and Domingos Quina are Under-21 talents knocking on the door of the first team. Midfielder Quina has impressed after starting the last two league games. The 19-year-old Portuguese also became the club's youngest scorer with a superb strike on Saturday.

Football: PSG's Cavani doubtful for Man United game

PARIS (REUTERS) - Edinson Cavani is a major doubt for Paris St Germain's Champions League clash with Manchester United after picking up a thigh injury in his team's 1-0 Ligue 1 win over Girondins de Bordeaux on Saturday (Feb 9).
The Uruguay striker left the pitch on the stroke of halftime holding his thigh, soon after scoring with a penalty in the 42nd minute.
The French champions will be missing Brazil forward Neymar, who has been ruled out with a foot injury, for the last-16 first-leg clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
"I honestly don't know if Cavani will play. Yes it is worrying. We don't have another Edi like we don't have another Neymar," said PSG coach Thomas Tuchel.
Italian midfielder Marco Verratti is also doubtful due to injury.
"There are a lot of plans B. Without Ney, maybe without Marco, maybe without Edi. We have a plan D," German Tuchel said.
"It's super difficult. If we miss several players the challenge will be even bigger. But we will be ready on Tuesday."

Football: Man City go top again, with Silva and Aguero goals in 2-0 win over misfiring Fulham

LONDON (REUTERS) - Top-class goals from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero took Manchester City back to the top of the Premier League in a 2-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday (March 30).
City's seventh successive league victory keeps alive their hopes an unprecedented quadruple of League Cup, Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophies this season.
A wayward ball from Fulham's Timothy Fosu-Mensah gifted the visitors the lead in the fifth minute.
Sergio Aguero intercepted the Dutchman's pass just outside the area and passed to Silva, who cut across past two defenders and drove his left-footed shot into the corner past the diving Sergio Rico in goal.
City manager Pep Guardiola told reporters that Silva was playing so well he had made himself a fixture in the lineup.
"The way he is playing, I cannot do anything else but put him on the pitch," he said.
Fulham, who were missing top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic after the international break, kept five men in the back line in a bid to keep City's attack at bay, leading to one-way traffic. In the end, the Cottagers were unable to register a single shot on target all game.

The home side's captain Tom Cairney won a freekick on the corner of the box in a rare break forward in the first half that had the home fans clapping and stamping their feet to rattle the century-old Johnny Haynes Stand.
However, Joe Bryan's cross was a whisker too high for Ryan Babel to head cleanly, and the ball went wide.
City's Silva turned provider in the 27th minute, pouncing onto a loose ball and passing to Aguero, who sprang forward past three defenders and shot from a tight angle up into the opposite corner for his league-leading 19th goal of the season.
Caretaker manager Scott Parker's Fulham have now failed to record a win in 14 games against City in all competitions and have lost the last eight in a row.
The result takes City back to the top of the Premier League on 77 points, one ahead of Liverpool who host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
"Now it's the last part of the season, seven games left. It's easy: Every game we play we have to win if we want to be champions," Guardiola said.
For Fulham, the outlook is bleak. They remain in 19th place on 17 points, and will now most likely need to win every one of their remaining six matches to have a chance of avoiding relegation.
"We understand the predicament. The main focus now is we push and we end the season on a positive after a difficult campaign," Fulham boss Parker told reporters.
"We have another game on Tuesday and we have to do better. We have six games left and mathematically we're still in it," defender Cyrus Christie said.

Football: Pele to have urinary tract surgery in Brazil, says hospital

SAO PAULO (AFP) - Pele will have an operation to remove a "ureteral stone,"  his doctors said on Wednesday (April 10), a day after the football great returned to Brazil following treatment in a Paris hospital for an infection.
The 78-year-old was admitted to the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo for more tests after arriving in Brazil early on Tuesday.
“The tests show the presence of stones in the left ureter and their removal is scheduled during the current hospital stay, but still without a defined date,” the hospital said in a statement.
“The patient is in a stable condition and good general state from a clinical point of view.”
Pele, who is widely considered to be the greatest footballer in history, was discharged late on Monday from the private American hospital in the Paris suburbs where he had been taken after falling ill following an appearance at a promotional event with France striker Kylian Mbappe.
In a statement on Monday on the Globoesporte.com site, Pele said he had required “medical assistance and surgery” for a “severe urinary infection.”
Pele, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and perhaps most memorably in Mexico in 1970 when his swashbuckling team re-defined modern football, has had several health scares in recent years.
On Wednesday, legendary Argentinian footballer Diego Maradona wished Pele well on Instagram, posting a picture of the two football greats in 1979.
"This picture is 40 years old today. It was taken in Rio de Janeiro, when we met each other in person. How young we were... I wish you a very speedy recovery, King @Pele," said the Argentine great, currently the coach of Mexican second-division club Dorados.
The picture shows an 18-year-old Maradona, his face aglow, watching Pele, then 38, play the guitar.

The two players are often cited as rivals for the title of greatest footballer of all time, fuelling the larger and never-ending rivalry between Brazil and Argentina.
Pele, the only footballer to win three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970), has suffered from increasingly fragile health in recent years.
In 2014, he was hospitalised in intensive care for another urinary tract infection, for which he had to undergo dialysis.

Football: Inter strip leading scorer Icardi of captaincy, 'keeper Handanovic takes armband

MILAN (REUTERS) - Inter Milan have stripped leading scorer Mauro Icardi of the team captaincy and handed it to goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, the Italian Serie A club said on Wednesday (Feb 13).
Inter did not give an explanation for the change, which they announced on their Twitter feed, and they did not immediately reply to e-mailed questions about the switch.
The Argentinian forward and the club have been in protracted negotiations over the extension of his contract.
The 25-year-old has been Inter's leading marksman in Serie A for the last four seasons and is also top scorer this term with nine goals, although he has not hit the target in their last seven league outings.
Icardi has had a turbulent relationship with the club and their fans and often provides fodder for the gossip columns, partly thanks to his marriage to Argentinian media personality Wanda Nara, who was previously married to Icardi's former teammate Maxi Lopez.
Nara is also Icardi's agent, and last month the player said she would continue to represent him for the rest of his career following a report in Gazzetta dello Sport that Inter wanted to deal with someone else.
In 2016, Icardi was jeered and insulted by Inter's "ultra" fans during a match against Cagliari, after they were angered by a chapter in his autobiography where he described a confrontation with supporters the year before.
Last week, coach Luciano Spalletti appeared to criticise the club for not finalising a deal with Icardi to extend his contract, which still has two and a half years to run.
"This needs to be resolved because when you do things by half, you leave them open to interpretation," said Spalletti after the 1-0 win over Parma on Saturday. "Mauro has been affected by certain situations in the last few weeks."

Football: Gabriel Jesus fires as Manchester City snatch top spot from Liverpool

LONDON (AFP) - Pep Guardiola welcomed Gabriel Jesus’ return to form as the Brazilian struck twice in a 3-1 win over Everton as Manchester City leapfrogged Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League.
Jesus hadn’t scored a Premier League goal for four months before opening the scoring midway through the first-half and bulleted home a header to double City’s lead early in the second-half.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin briefly gave Everton hope, but Raheem Sterling came off the bench to make the game safe with his first touch and move City two points ahead of Liverpool, who host Manchester United on Sunday.
“Strikers need to score goals,” said Guardiola of Jesus’s man-of-the-match performance.
“The difference today was that he scored as he was in better positions.”
Guardiola could even afford the luxury of leaving Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero on the bench on their return from injury as the Catalan coach again shuffled his pack for the busy festive period.
But fears in recent weeks that City lack a predator in front of goal when Aguero is absent were quashed by two fine finishes from Jesus.
“My confidence is back because my family is here and it helps me a lot. I needed my family in this moment,” said the Brazilian international.
“This year it (the title) will be more difficult because the (other) clubs will play better. I think it is very important we have come back to first position.”

Caught cold

With temperatures approaching freezing in Manchester, City were nearly caught cold by a rare Everton break early on when Richarlison fired the first big chance of the game over from Lucas Digne’s cross.
“The biggest chance was our chance with Richarlison,” Everton boss Marco Silva said.
“Against these teams we have to be effective when we create opportunities to score.”
And Everton also played a big part in their own downfall at the other end when Jesus opened the scoring.
Yerry Mina’s hopeful punt gifted away possession and the Colombian then played Jesus onside as the Brazilian ran onto Sane’s pass to fire low past Pickford.
The England number one handed Liverpool victory in the Merseyside derby earlier this month, but Pickford wasn’t so charitable to City as he made an excellent save to prevent Riyad Mahrez doubling the hosts’ lead just before half-time.
The champions had to wait just five minutes after the break to make it 2-0, when a patient build-up again found Sane on the left and the German’s cross was met by a powerful header from Jesus.
Everton had barely offered any threat in the second period before they got back into the game 25 minutes from time, Calvert-Lewin’s header from a high-hanging Digne cross flicking off Fabian Delph and past the helpless Ederson.
Guardiola responded by sending on Sterling for Sane and in a week when the England international has bravely spoken out about the alleged racist abuse he suffered last weekend by Chelsea fans, he also made his mark on the field by scoring immediately.
“I think Raheem has handled the last few years in terms of situations and rumours, about him or his family or the colour of his skin very calmly,” added Guardiola.
“I admire him and appreciate that it’s not easy for him. He’s loved by all staff and in the locker room.”
Jesus was involved again as he freed Fernandinho inside the area and his cross picked out the unmarked Sterling to score a rare header.
De Bruyne then made his first appearance for six weeks – just his fourth in the Premier League all season, all of which have come as a substitute – after lengthy absences for two knee injuries.
Other than defeat to Chelsea last weekend, City have barely missed a beat without the Belgian, but the return of their player of the year in last season’s record-breaking campaign is an early Christmas present for Guardiola ahead of Liverpool’s visit to the Etihad on Jan 3.

Football: West Ham beat Fulham 2-0 to post fourth win in a row

LONDON (REUTERS) - West Ham won their fourth successive Premier League game to add to Fulham’s woes at Craven Cottage on Saturday (Dec 15), beating their cross-London rivals 2-0 with goals from Robert Snodgrass and Michail Antonio.
Fulham, yet to keep a clean sheet this season, stayed rooted to the bottom of the table with nine points from 17 games, while the Hammers rose to ninth place on 24 points.
New Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri had been looking to build on the four points his side took in their first two home games under his charge.
His players created most of the early pressure, with strikers Andre Schurlle and Aboubakar Kamara firing in shots and creating chances within the opening 10 minutes.
But it was Manuel Pellegrini’s visitors who took the lead after 17 minutes when midfielder Felipe Anderson sprang past Fulham’s Denis Odoi and fed the ball back to Snodgrass, who blasted his left-footed shot high into the top left corner.
Anderson helped West Ham to double their lead 12 minutes later, crossing in from near the sideline to Javier Hernandez. The Mexican striker nodded the ball back behind him to Antonio, who brought it down and quickly slotted it between the legs of onrushing Cottagers keeper Sergio Rico.
West Ham have won every game in December, their best run in the Premier League since February 2014.
“In the first half, you create a few chances against a team like Fulham, who are scrapping for points, you have to take them and we did. It was a great performance and four wins on the bounce is always good,” said Snodgrass.
The contrast could not be starker with their first four games of the season, all of which they lost, and the Hammers are now just two points behind sixth-placed Manchester United.
Ranieri was philosophical in defeat although he knows Fulham’s fortunes will have to turn around soon if they are to avoid an instant return to the Championship.
“We have to stay calm, reflect and try to work harder, harder and harder,” said the Italian. “In a bad moment, it is important to stay together. We have a very good group, I’m sure we will react soon.”

Football: Gordon Banks' illustrious career extended beyond iconic save

Football: Gordon Banks' illustrious career extended beyond iconic save

Gordon Banks, the England football team's goalkeeper when they won the 1966 World Cup, died aged 81.
His former club Stoke announced this on Tuesday (Feb 12) and Banks' family said he died peacefully in his sleep overnight.
Here are seven things about the former star.

1.  Was picked up by amateur side Millspaugh after their regular goalkeeper went AWOL

He was a teenager then. A Millspaugh coach recognised Banks among the spectators and remembered he played for Sheffield Schoolboys. This was in the 1950s, and Banks had already left school by age 15 and was also working as a bagger with a local coal merchant.

2. Banks' first professional club was Chesterfield

This is where he signed a part-time £3-a-week contract in 1953.
However, he had to start from the reserves, where he conceded 122 goals in the 1954-55 season as they finished bottom of the Central League. Nevertheless, he improved and was awarded his first team debut in 1958.

3. He moved to Leicester City in 1959

He made the move for a £7,000 transfer fee and saw his wages increased to £15 a week. His career took off with the Foxes as he put in extra hours after training and devised his own drills in an era where there was no goalkeeping coaches.

Gordon Banks vs Pele World Cup Save

Banks was called up to the England team and made his international debut in a 2-1 loss to Scotland in 1963. He set the record straight when he ended his international career with 73 caps and a 1-0 win over the Scots in 1972.

4. Won his first piece of silverware via the 1964 League Cup with Leicester

That preceded the biggest prize of them all - the 1966 World Cup. By now, Banks was England No. 1 and kept four straight clean sheets in the three group games and quarter-final.
There was some concern ahead of the semi-final against Portugal when a coach forgot and had to rush to buy chewing gum which Banks used to make his gloves stickier and improve his handling. Banks was beaten only by an Eusebio penalty, ending an England record of 721 minutes without conceding and the Three Lions won 2-1. They would go on and beat West Germany 4-2 in the final.

5. Despite winning the World Cup, he was dropped

Leicester dropped him at the end of the 1966/67 season with Peter Shilton on the rise. He won the League Cup again in 1972 and during his time with the Potters, he also played on loan in America with the Cleveland Stokers and in South Africa with Hellenic.

6. His was possibly the first goalkeeping save that went viral

Banks scrambled to his right to flick Pele's header, which was planted at almost ground level, over the bar. Pele was already celebrating and later called it the greatest save ever, while England captain Bobby Moore merely quipped: "You're getting old, Banksy, you used to hold on to them."
Brazil would win that 1970 World Cup group game 1-0 and go on to win their third world title.

7. A car crash in October 1972 took away the sight in his right eye and his professional career

Incredibly, he returned to play for Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 1977 and 1978 with just one good eye, and even won the North American Soccer League Goalkeeper of the Year in 1977 for the best defensive record.

Football: Still no timeframe for Neymar return, say PSG

PARIS (REUTERS) - Paris St Germain striker Neymar will not be making an early return from injury, coach Thomas Tuchel said on Saturday (March 30) ahead of his side's trip to Toulouse in Ligue 1.
The Brazilian has been out for more than two months with a metatarsal problem during which time PSG have continued their march towards the domestic title but stumbled out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage.
"Neymar is feeling good, no pain," Tuchel told reporters on the eve of PSG's game at Toulouse.
Neymar's return had been scheduled for mid-April, although there were hopes he would make a fast recovery.
"But it's too soon to talk about having him back on the pitch. We have to be patient," added Tuchel.
PSG will already be without injured Angel Di Maria, Thomas Meunier and Julian Draxler on Sunday.
However, those omissions should not be of major concern as PSG command a 20-point lead at the top of Ligue 1.

Football: Everton held to goalless draw at Palace

LONDON (REUTERS) - Everton's hopes of finishing in seventh and a potential Europa League qualification spot suffered a blow as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the Premier League on Saturday (April 27).
Coming into the match on the back of four wins in their last five league games, including a 4-0 victory over Manchester United last time out, Everton had much the better of the action in the first half, but could not convert from their 11 shots.
After the break, the visitors continued to press with Dominic Calvert-Lewin firing into the side netting.
Everton went even closer in the 54th minute, but Bernard's powerful effort came out off the crossbar.
Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita then had to be at his best to deny substitute Cenk Tosun, while the hosts offered very little as an attacking force, seeing out the draw which means they have won just four times at home in the league this season.
The point helped Everton climb above Watford on goal difference into eighth position, but they are now four points behind Wolverhampton Wanderers in seventh, while Palace stay 12th.
"We deserved to win that, but that's no disrespect to Crystal Palace," Everton manager Marco Silva told the BBC.
"We weren't clinical enough. We dominated the game and dealt with them well, but in front of goal it was disappointing."
Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson was full of praise for Everton, and was relieved they did not appear to hit their top gear.
"I'm pleased to get a point," Hodgson told Sky Sports.
"I thought Everton were good.
"You always have to give credit to the opposition, but they didn't find the level they found last week. They were much more compact when we had the ball."

Football: Guardiola stays cool despite shock Man City defeat

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he was not disappointed by his players' effort despite suffering a surprise 3-2 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday (Dec 22).
Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for the home side at the Etihad but Palace hit back with goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Andros Townsend followed by a Luka Milivojevic penalty.
Substitute Kevin De Bruyne gave City late hope but it was not enough and they remain four points behind leaders Liverpool after their first home defeat of the season.
"We started quite decent and created chances," Guardiola told the BBC. "We scored a fantastic goal and after they passed the halfway line they scored.
"The third goal... we cannot concede the penalty we conceded. We have to try and avoid it. Football is like this. Three shots on goal and three goals.
"It's complicated but we fight until the last second. We are in December and we will try and recover and try and win games again."
Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson put his side's victory down to hard work.

"You don't produce that sort of performance by waving a magic wand or having a five-minute team talk - there's a lot of work that goes into that structure and we were excellent," he told the BBC.
"We are playing against a team with enormous skill levels and their focus, their ability to sustain attacks, is an example to us all."
He described Townsend's goal as "magnificent".
"I wouldn't say I thought he was going to score but he gave himself a chance. It will be a contender for goal of the week, if not goal of the year."
